I finally got the opportunity to shoot a multi-camera LIVE concert at Dallas at Deep Ellum Art Co. with an active camera for “20 Hounds”, a Dead tribute band.
It was a 3 hour and 15 minute show with two sets. Being a “Deadhead” for the last 35 years, I know every song, where the solos are, where the vocals come in and what to focus on at any given point, which helps immensely going in to a production like this.
I also ran my own audience recorder so I was able to capture some sweet audio.
There were 100+ people in attendance and everyone was really into it. Their guest guitarist “Joe” was fantastic and basically showed up, played and added some wonderful color and Jerry attitudes that made this performance a lot of fun.
I also added extra little visual goodies scattered throughout the performance just to add to the vibe. From 60’s psychedelic liquid swirling oil drops and water to animated tie dyes, animated mandalas, 3D roses and even a Cheshire Cat grinning and slowly disappearing into nothing to match the lyrics and music.
I always find ways to add dimension to every project to work on with my clients. Given free reign, wonderful things show up based on the patterns I recognize and ideas that materialize as the creative process takes over and the project is creating itself.
Being a musician myself and an avid concertgoer, I know what I would want to see when watching a LIVE concert. I can’t stand ADD’d out shots that last 2 seconds and on to the next shot that never lets you get a chance to appreciate the musicianship, let alone the performance. I also hate it when the best part of a song is going on and the camera is pointed at a totally random musician. Or you want to see what they are doing and it never lets you watch it being made. Very annoying. So, I make it a point to edit in such a way based on the ,material that I have and let it flow shot to show to match the feeling in the performance and give you a feel for the room vibe as well with the audience.
If you are in a band or have a need for a multi-camera live music shoot, feel free to contact me. Let’s talk about your project and see what the possibilities can be.
