I was contracted to design a band poster for an upcoming concert for my friend’s band “Fuzzgoblin” out of Austin, Texas and playing a gig at The Little Darlin’. They are a 1970’s inspired rock and roll group in the same vein as Black Sabbath, Uriah Heap and ZZ Top.
He described a retro looking scene of a kid on a skateboard eating a cheeseburger. He created an image using AI and sent it to me. The problem was making it work for the poster design and social media graphics, in addition to adding all of the informative text for the gig, venue, date etc.
I decided that I could extend the top and sides of the image using an AI image extender to get the exact proportional box shape that I needed.
I then decided to make it look like an old metal sign from the 1950’s, inspired by the cool statue out front of all Kip’s Big Boy diners that used to scatter the countryside. With a little trial and error through my prompts, I was able to get it to look as good as I needed it to for how I would be using it. Then I was able to edit out anything I didn’t want using photoshop.
I was told by a wise man that when you do your work well, no one will ever know that you did anything.
I grew to understand what he meant after many years. Basically, you want to get to the point in all of the art that you create where the art is perfect as it is. No noticeable visual shortcomings by the average viewer or even the above average viewer. It stands on its own.
My friend and his bandmates absolutely loved what I came up with and the show was a success as well.
