When I found out that Home Depot had actually released an animatronic R2D2 last Christmas 2025, I couldn’t believe it. Of course they sold out across the country instantly. I put a tracker on it so if it ever came back, I would at least know.
Well, shoot ahead 12 months later and low a behold, they did it! 1,000 instantly became available in late August and little by little, one by one, they immediately started disappearing from Home Depot’s website. I was able to snag one right before they all disappeared.
I couldn’t believe it! I already have a life-sized Yoda from the Phantom Menace – Blockbuster Video/Pepsi contest where only 500 were made and given away as prizes.
But what makes this special is it has lights, sounds and movement just like the real thing.It actually had some light weathering all over the droid, which was pretty cool. It wasn’t a bad job but still needs alot more weathering details and parts to make it look more screen accurate.
I know there are many folks out there that will keep him untouched or remove all of the weathering with “pink stuff” cleaner so he is returned completely white and looking brand new.
Personally, that isn’t what R2 is about.
He is used, been through all kinds of galactic adventures on multiple worlds. Of course, he is going to have anomalies that show wear and tear and resonates with a lived-in universe.
As soon as I unboxed it, put it together and turned it on, I couldn’t believe how real he is and that it feels like you are looking at the real Artoo-Deetoo from Star Wars.
I instantly began figuring out what I wanted to modify and make even better than the stock parts. So, I began to take inventory of everything that was available as an upgrade and what would make him look almost identical tho the screen version of R2.
The very first thing I did to him was to begin the process of weathering to be more screen accurate, worn and used.
I looked at as many reference photos I should get showing what others had done to theirs and stills from Star Wars showing up close details. I love to paint and draw, so this is like creating artwork, but even cooler because it is also in a movie that I have loved since I was a kid.
After watching the original Star Wars again, I noticed that there are multiple R2 units used throughout the film because you see different weathering on each of them. Some more weather than others in different places and to different degrees of wear and tear.
The challenge is to not overdo it, make it seem natural but close in all of the detailing. When I look around at what other have done with their R2 Units, most are very heavy handed in the application of paint with no subtlety. Just way too much and way too thick.
Just gradually build up, wipe it down, and repeat until it looks right and just enough organic randomness that looks like real weathering.
Less is more in some areas and the little things are what will make it look authentic. The best compliment will be, as a great friend of mine always says:”When you do your work well, know one will ever know that you did anything.” Which basically means that it will be invisible to most people.
You don’t want to call attention to it. It must be organic and “feel” real. As an intuitive artist, I always look at my work as it goes along and think, how does it feel. And then work according to that principle.
The materials I used were 1/16″ black crepe tape for all of the panel boxes, 1/8 silver tape for the legs, silver Rub ‘N Buff, an xacto blade, brown, orange, tan and black acrylic paints along with watercolors (creating a more translucent effect to build up colors with), a handful of small paint brushes and a painting cloth.
I spent a total of $15 and two days and here are the results that I got showing before and after photos:
I also went on ETSY and ordered some upgrade parts as well that are 3D printed and fabricated to fit perfectly.
Some of these upgrades include more film accurate braided copper wires, connectors and metal faceplates for the feet, an astropixel lighting kit for the 2 horizontal blue and white lights on the front and the single horizontal multicolor strip of lights on the rear of the dome that look just like the LED panels in the film, a film accurate dome eye lens and blue panel, leg interior screw cover hexagonal panels, under the shoulder horshoe details and a cool magnetic restraining bolt.
Once I have assembled all of my upgrades, then I will begin the task of installing each one and then my R2D2 droid will be complete…and I will RULE THE GALAXY FOREVER!
Well, I will at least have a film accurate R2D2 Astromech droid that makes me smile every day just to look at it and appreciate how Star Wars influenced me to become an artist, musician, composer and filmmaker all at one time, with a gift that keeps on giving…creatively!
