Back in 2020, I was working with C-Scenic as a digital artist in Dallas and went out to a 17th century slave ship walkthrough and exhibit they had created and installed over at The Studios at Las Colinas at Glenn Beck’s radio studio.
The exhibition was created for a history of slavery and was created so you could actually walk through the entire lower deck of the ship. It was filled with thick, heavy ropes, wooden barrels and even vomit on the sleeping quarters wood railings.
The 17th century slave ship was scheduled to be dismantled and put into storage for it’s next location to be transported to.
So, knowing I had a limited time to shoot footage, I started finding all of the best angles, movement, details and amazing fabrication but most importantly, I had to make sure that no one was visible in any shot as it was being disassembled.
I had to work very quickly to document the ship and it’s quarters as all of the pieces were being dismantled, packed up and put into storage to be part of a traveling exhibition that would go across the country as part of a traveling historical slavery exhibit for the next year or so.
I tried to capture every angle, shoot ‘B’ roll of every possible thing I could and while all this was taking place, they were actually disassembling the entire thing! Not only did I capture the last time we would see it intact locally, but I also shot footage capturing the entire disassembly as well! That footage is just waiting to be edited.
They loved what I created for them as they had no footage for the build at all. It truly captured their creative talent and expertise as well as their ingenuity in the modular design that they created that is invisible to the observer.
